Thanks for the refreshing read. It’s been a struggle for me to understand how Trump’s rise to be the nominee of a major political party is even possible. If there were a governing ethics committee reviewing potential candidates, he would have been dropped before he even had a chance to open his mouth.
But life is tough for a lot of Americans— and there has been a constant stream of news for the last 8 years that “it’s Obama’s fault, or look what Obamacare has done (and not in a good way)”. I think I ignore most of it, seeing Obama as a shining light in our political discourse. But to those that see the opposite, when someone comes riding in to save the day, with anger and racism, blaming people’s problems on other members of our society, he gets listened to.
Our media too, has a big part to play. I’ve seen a number of articles admitting how great it’s been for business. A number of smaller publications teetering on extinction have been able to come back reporting on Trump. And if he’s dominating the media, that gives him credibility.
And what’s our media, but a reflection of our inner desires? We read it because it feels shocking, either in a good way or bad way, and ultimately we’re saying this is the sensational act that we want to pay attention to.
On the upswing, Trump may be the push I need to get involved by actively participating. Maybe Trump is just the question of whether there is enough strength in this country to stand up to a loud-mouthed bully.
