How do you learn to tell stories more effectively?

I struggle with this — I fall into the new blogger category… and after a few months, found that as much effort I put into my writing, it still felt like it was missing something.

The blogs I really enjoy are always telling really personal, open stories that stretch my thinking — they’re never the “this is what I saw”, or “ten things you should do”. It’s the ones that connect personal stories about something, and with a point.

How do you actually learn how to write like this? Is it just practice and luck? Or are there ways to learn storytelling?
